Question:
I've been back running after an intermittent
couple of years. I've done 8 weeks
and my typical week has been as follows:
Tuesday 2.3 miles (Now at about 8:00
mins per mile)
Thursday 2.3 miles
Sunday 6.3 miles (At about 9 mins
per mile)
However, I've just upped my long run
to 8 miles (once) and did this at
about
10 mins per mile (since it was the
first time I'd done that distance
for 3
years I took it real easy) Also I
occasionally run the short runs in
a sort
of Fartlek style.
Now my questions are:
1. I'd like to build up to a 1/2 marathon.
For my first go I think I'd be
happy with sub 2 hours. When do you
think it would be realistic for me
to
attempt this?
2. I realise that I need to increase
my training. However, whilst I can
easily increase the distance run,
increasing the frequency is a lot
more
difficult. Is this likely to be a
problem?
3. As I said, I'd like to do a 1/2
marathon and perhaps a couple of 10K
runs
in preparation. I'm in Essex, England.
does anyone have any suggestions for
good events?
4. Finally what is a good fun runner
time for a 1/2 marathon? I figure
I
can do sub 2 hours, perhaps a bit
quicker. Am I going to be trailing
in
after everybody? I'd hate to come
last in my first run.
Answer:
To be honest, a 2hr finish should
see you home well before last in most
1/2's. As an example of finish times,
in this year's Watford 1/2, 1682
finished. The first runner over 2hrs
was finisher 1273.
Looking at your current times, with
an increase in mileage over a few
months, even on 3 days/week, I suspect
you'll be well under the 2hr mark
anyway.
