Question:
This may be a silly question, but I am wondering if trail running shoes would help me run better in ice and mud, as the snow starts its big melt on the running paths. Are they built for that, or are they made primarily for rugged, off-road conditions? Also, how is the cushioning?

Answer:
A good pair of off road shoes will help you to run more relaxed and confident on a variety of terrains. I have ran in trail running shoes (or studs as we call them) in every condition known, from the fells in the English Lake District to muddy fields near my house.

I have found them very effective in snow and slushy conditions as well as the mud and rocks. In my experience I have found the pyramid shaped stud the better for
gripping qualities.

As for cushioning some are a bit basic in that department, one make I have used for many years for overall off road training are the New Balance Trailblazer, good cushioning without being unstable. These are nicely cushioned even on road surfaces.
