Question:
my girlfriend and I are thinking
about participating in the 2007
Walt Disney World Half Marathon
- I figure we'll need more than
just 1 year to prepare, so we'll
skip the next installment).
So, my question to all of you out
there that have participated in
a half-marathon before is: How do
we start?
Ok, so that's a loaded question.
We're both in so-so shape at this
point, but really don't know where
or how to begin. Our goals are to
be in great shape, and to see all
the cool stuff that Disney marathoners
get to see.
Answer:
When I was in training for the Disney
Marathon I ran 3 times a week. 2
runs, Wed and Fri at a speedy set
pace. One run on Sunday, this is
your slow long run that you want
to improve on every week. An important
point I have heard and subscribe
too is do not run the full half
marathon before you run in the race
because it will help you achieve
it during the race and you will
get a nifty sense of accomplishment.
I started
30 weeks prior, running 6 days a
week. Saturday was my no run day,
Sun-Thurs were mostly 1 or 2 mile
runs, and Friday was the long run.
Unfortunately, I took a tumble at
18 weeks and was unable to train
at all for the last 12 weeks before
the half marathon.
I've used that same 30 week plan
and plugged the dates in for prep
for 2006, and backed up to the current
time with 3-4 runs of 1 or 2 miles
per week leading up to that 30-week
point.
