Advice On Half-marathon Training
Question:
A while ago (4 months mabe) I started running for fitness etc. I slowly
built up the distance, and now run about 10km 5 times a week. I was
wondering if theres any special training nessesary to do a half marathon?,
should I just keep increasing my distance? or incorperate mabe 1 longer run
a week? With friends i've run 14 and 18km runs so I think i'm nearly there.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Answer:
increasing one run per week is all you have to do. it looks like you have built up a base of 30 mi per week

personally i wouls suggest you wait and continue your base training for another 3 months or so before you train for your half marathon... just to make sure your body can handle it. it's possible you could be overtraining slowly and should you train for your half now you may get seriously injured which would really suck.

so personally i would say keep building up for another 3 months. then start your training 3 to 5 months out from the marathon..

then keep your running X per week the same but increase the dsitance of one of those runs in fact to try to prevent overtraining you may want to cut back a few of your runs durning the week as you increase the distance on your long run. i.e. right now you are 10k 10k 10k 10k 10k maybe change that to 10k 7k 10k 7k LONG RUNQUOTE and your LONG RUN would be (based on about 3.5 months from the half marathon)

week distance
1 11.5K
2 13K
3 14.5
4 13K
5 14.5
6 16
7 13K
8 14.5
9 16
10 17K
11 13
12 10K
13 8K
(THIS WEEK YOU TAPER.. so maybe 3 to 5K four your four weekday runs)
14 half marahton
