Trail Running Shoes
Question:
I am back running after a prolonged rest of nearly a year due to the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. I can do 3-4 miles at a snails pace and am just getting used to the *stress* on the body again.

My rheumatologist has cautioned me no hills and has me taking Plaquenil daily, he suggested I get trail shoes for the added ankle support and cushion. Running is far less stressful on my affected joints (ankles, shoulders) than fast walking is. Why is that?

I have no stability/pronation issues and need a cushioned shoe. I used to have a pair of men's NB trail shoes, I want to say 880? or 900? but it's been years since I bought them. They were just right for me..and sad to say I can't find a cushy pair of ANY shoe now that I like as well. They all feel under padded and thin..if that makes sense.

Any advice? I plan on running my usual 3-4 miles with maybe one longer run eventually of 8 or so I used to run 8 miles in a little under an hour with no strain.

Answer:
Do you do any on the treadmill, or is that not your thing? It's obviously easier on the joints - perhaps you could supplement a little at least to help the building back period. I'd forget about trail shoes and go for a regular cushion shoe. Asics Nimbus/Cumulus would be a good place to start. Both are cushy-cushion shoes. The Nimbus is cushier and heavier.
