Question:
I'm looking to buy some shorts as
a gift for a running enthusiast
(fairly serious/sporty) and would
appreciate some recommendations
(I'm a cyclist not a runner, so
I don't really know what to look
for in running shorts). I'm looking
to spend up to around $40 - preferably
not much more than that.
I like the
look of the Pearl Izumi Mercury
shorts - does anyone have any experience
with these?
Answer:
Shorts are shorts really, but one
really useful feature is a key pocket.
From a purely aesthetic point of
view, my wife would say that the
normal running shorts are truly
hideous, and that lycra cycling
shorts type running shorts are the
way to go. I like these myself -
they hold the undercarriage much
more snugly than the rather flimsy
lining of normal running shorts,
and provided that a key pocket is
available, then almost any make
will do.
I am currently
rotating Fila, New Balance, Ron
Hill and several pairs of Nike.
All fine.
For a rather better fit, and not
such a long leg, you could try women's
shorts (I find that the women's
large translates to men's medium,
and that there are often bargains
to be had). There are no other functional
differences as far as I can tell.
