Question:
Is there any scientific research
into optimum weight increase? Say
I start at 100lbs in the bench press,
and i add 5 lbs per week, in 10
weeks I will bench press 150lbs.
Would I achieve the same degree
of muscle growth if I increase from
100lbs to 150lbs straigth away?
I am trying to workout what is a
good amount of weight to add.
Answer:
Lifting is a pedestal; the three
legs are training, nutrition and
rest. The top is the supplementation,
steriods or otherwise. So. the short
answer is no. Growing muscle and
getting stronger are not mutually
exclusive goals, but neither are
they synonymous. I'm no expert,
but I suspect the ability to actually
_press_ the new weight will prove
a factor. If 100 pounds is tough,
150 will crush you. Whereas 105
may just be brutal.

3-5% is usually the standard advice.
5 lbs is usually the practical lower
limit as most gyms tend to have
2.5 lb plates as their lowest increment.
In the long run, it probably doesn't
matter. Muscles grow in response
to progressive overload; so focus
on adding weight over time and eating
enough and you're doing most of
what you can do.
